Via Claudia Augusta

The origin of the “Emperor’s Road over the Alps”, the “Via Claudia Augusta”,
dates back to Celtic times.

The Romans later used this connecting path of the Celts over the Alps and developed it into the famous “Via Claudia Augusta”, which ran from the Po Valley through the Venosta / Vinschgau Valley to the Danube River.

Today the widely used Venosta / Vinschgau Valley Cycling Track runs along the former Roman road, which for 80km connects Malles / Mals and Merano / Meran. Along this cycling track, time and again one can see historic market towns, castles, ruins and ancient sites such as Monte Maria Monastery / Abtei Marienberg, all of which invite passers-by for a visit.
