Castles and mansions
Coira Castle in Sluderno / Schluderns was built in the 13th century and extended in the 16th century by the Counts of Trapp to become the most magnificent Renaissance manor in South Tyrol. Today Coira Castle is still owned by the Trapp family and is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in the area. Particularly worth seeing is the armoury, with the largest private collection of suits of armor in Europe.
The castle complex, built in 1278, has since 1983 been owned by the extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner. The castle accommodates the Messner Mountain Museum Juvale / Juval, where Reinhold Messner exhibits several works from his private art collections, including a comprehensive Tibetan collection, a gallery of mountain images, and a collection of masks from four continents.
